first read it when i was young in madeleine l'engle's *a swiftly tilting planet.* there are different wordings. i believe in her version, it starts with "In this fateful hour" and there's no extra "and" at the end of the sun line (and God has it's apostrophe S there at the end - lots of typos today!). i think i like her version best, come to mention it, for those little differences. i remember the musicality of it really, well, striking a note with me.

i love the lorica and the rune of st. patrick. do you it? ~lamb

All heaven with its power
and the sun with its brightness and,
and the snow with its whiteness,
and the fire with all the strength it hath-
and lightning with its rapid wrath
and the winds with their swiftness along their path.
And the sea with its deepness,
and the rocks with their steepness
and the earth with its starkness-
     all these I place
by God almighty help and grace
     between myself and
     the powers of darkness!
